Help Fire Fighters Fight Drought

Sonoma County Drought Tolerant plants

By Kellen Watson & Brianna Schafer, Daily Acts

What have your local fire fighters given to you and our community? A sense of security? A helping hand in a time of need? A well-timed bell ring from a shiny engine? Fire Fighters have done a lot for our communities over the years, and now it’s our chance to give something back.

The Petaluma fire fighters take a lot of pride in their live-in fire station on S. McDowell, and would like to grow food and habitat rather than weeds in their thirsty front yard. It’s time to transform this old lawn into a water-wise, edible model garden that the whole community can be proud of. Since these local heroes have to respond to calls 24/7, it is difficult for them to carry out a renovation project from start to finish…they need our support to make this project a reality. Can you lend a hand?

We’ll start off with an educational overview of the site’s new water harvesting earthworks, and then get to work sheet mulching the lawn and planting a beautiful mixture of edible, medicinal, and habitat providing plants. Participants will learn eco-friendly landscaping techniques and get tips on great, multi-functional plants that can be used at home. Get to know your neighbors and get fired up by giving back to those who give us so much.

Bring your kids out to meet and support our real life heroes! A delicious lunch will be provided, so please sign up at so organizers know how many people to expect.
