Quarryhill Botanical Garden

Travel east on Highway 12 to the Valley of the Moon, slow down in Glen Ellen and watch for the small sign with red lettering on your left.  Ah, there it is!  And now your garden sensory center is about to be pleasured. Quarryhill Botanical Garden is a “must see” for the garden enthusiast as well as a very pleasant and rejuvenating experience in the outdoors for anyone.

This little known gem in the Sonoma Valley, once the home of Jane Davenport Jansen, is a marvelous, diverse and expanding collection of Asian botanical wonders in a reserve that was created by Jane, whose spirit and legacy live on in the Garden.  Many of the plants are endangered species, here preserved and maintained by a year-round dedicated staff and volunteers, as the destruction of their native habitat continues.

For two decades plus, Quarryhill representatives have collected seeds throughout Asia in yearly expeditions, nurtured them in its nursery and placed them into the grounds of the reserve.  Affiliations with grand, world famous nurseries such as Kew and Royal Botanic Gardens are a testament to the value and importance of the preservation and propagation of these plants.

The reserve is easy walking in comfortable shoes, with changes in elevation not too steep.  Water features such as streams and ponds add interest to the beauty of the Garden’s composition in its natural state.

Quarryhill Botanical Garden will hold its Hypertufa Container Building Two-part series:

Saturday, October 30 and Saturday, November 6 with Shigeo Kubota of San Francisco Horticulture
